Meet The Team: Andrew Smith

{Every week, we will shine the spotlight on one of our Oak Ridge Hotels team members, to give you a bit of an insight into who we are, and what we do. This week is the turn of Ashbourne Hotel Director, Andrew Smith…..}

Name: Andrew Smith

How many years working for the company: I’ve worked here for 8 ½ years, so I’m definitely no newcomer. Prior to this I started in the hospitality industry as junior steward in the Royal Navy, so it’s safe to say that I have broad experience within this sector!

Which hotel do you work for: The Ashbourne Hotel in North Killingholme

Job title/role: Hotel Director

Day to day tasks: It’s always a juggle, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Duties generally include mixing the day to day running of the operation alongside the team with finding & moving the hotel in the right direction in an ever evolving market place.  There is never a quiet moment really!

Favourite part of job: Sampling the new menus (tasting new dishes with ingredients I love)

Least favourite part of job: Sampling new menus (tasting new dishes with ingredients I’m not so keen on!)

Favourite item on the menu:  Anything spicy, but that said, we are spoilt for choice as there are lots of other items on the current menu that are vying for “favourite” spot with me!

Three skills important for your job: Diplomacy, tact, and discretion. I think these are probably the most important skills when a large part of the job is a customer facing role – though a friendly face always helps too!

Three words that sum you up: Diplomatic, Tactful & Discrete. (what else could I say?!)

Advice you’d give to others looking to do a similar role: This is not a Monday – Friday, 9 – 5 job. You need commitment, you need to be prepared to work long and unsociable hours – mostly weekends & evenings, and weekly hours can often be in the region of 60 – 70. That said, for the right person it is a terrifically rewarding job, that offers huge job satisfaction, especially with a strong team like we have at the Ashbourne. There are always new challenges and opportunities in this extremely competitive industry, and we’re always looking for new  ways to improve the overall customer experience.
